Review: A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

After years of begging her mother to move out of India and back to London, Gemma Doyle is finally sent to finishing school under less than ideal circumstances to find out she has no idea who her mother really is or who she is.

A Great and Terrible Beauty is a favorite book of mine. It weaves an intriguing story set against a gorgeous Victorian landscape. While the author includes hints of romance, it's quite subtle, which I enjoyed because with teen lit, you usually have heavy drama and romance. We Are All Damaged SomehowShe is not beautiful.

She is dirty, tainted.

Impure.

She is Lucifer, fallen from heaven, and she wonders if anyone misses her up there.

She has lost the one person she has ever truly loved, and as much as Gemma insists that Pippa made the choice to eat the berries, to stay forever beautiful in that dream-like world, Felicity knows the truth. If they hadn't left Pippa behind, she wouldn't have even had the choice to make.

She would be with Felicity, in the real world. They could lay side by side, hands clasped, anchoring each other to this world.

The Garden of Eden,
A garden that can contort with the very thoughts of mind,
A human desire, temptation,
A provocative rush of assimilation,
The tranquil prose in the caressing breeze,
